Mercury Arc Rectifier
The Mercury Arc Rectifier was invented by Peter Cooper Hewitt in 1902. They convert AC current to DC current and became obsolete with the invention of high-voltage solid state devices.
They definitely look like something straight out of a dark science fiction movie. If it weren't for their risk of explosion and all the mercury, I'd love to have one of these glowing in the corner of my living room.
