We all know the situation in the Gulf is getting worse by the minute. What’s interesting is that there seems to be a media blackout in the worst effected areas. Why would BP hire “security forces” to keep journalists out and why is the coast guard, police and military cooperating with them? My guess is that, much like their initial estimates of how much oil was gushing into the Gulf, the situation on our shores is much worse than we are being told it is. The U.S. Military has been mobilized to help with the clean up efforts and rumors of FEMA’s preparation for mass evacuation has been making its way through the web.
There are now hundreds of reports of people getting sick, as beaches in Pensacola Beaches are open against Federal advice. While BP and some local governments are trying to downplay the situation, they are putting people’s health and safety at risk. There are already several “dead zones” along the coast but so far there has been no evacuated areas. Although it’s quite possible, I doubt evacuation orders will be put into place unless absolutely necessary. It seems like they would rather risk exposing people to toxic chemicals and fumes for as long as possible before admitting that something needs to be done to protect the people.
Maybe all it will take is one big hurricane or maybe they are waiting for preparations to be completed, but evacuation in some areas seem like a real possibility. Hopefully, if it comes down to evacuation, things will go better than they did in southeast Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. The contaminated FEMA trailers have already made a re-appearance, housing oil clean up workers. Unfortunately, things are only going to continue getting worse. This is really one of those "no hope in sight" scenarios.
